Editor's Choice

MONSE’S TASTE OF EL SALVADOR

Monse Hines, who is from El Salvador, owns this family business, which serves curtido, a light cabbage salad that is used as a relish for many El Salvadorian dishes, and pupusas, corn flour cakes that are filled with cheese and meat. She produces everything in a commercial kitchen and sells them in local health foods stores and farmers markets. One taste and you’ll become an instant fan of the delicious crunchy salad and steamy hot corn bread pockets. Head to the website for ever-changing store locations.

LA BAGUETTE FRENCH BISTRO

Make no mistake, this is ground zero for French cuisine, but Patrick Garnier, the Frenchman who co-owns the bistro with wife Krystyna, knows his way around many other styles of food. Think Polish and Irish, for example. He cooks with precision regardless of the cuisine he focuses on. It should be noted that although there are four La Baguette restaurants in town, they are all independently owned and offer certain different options on their menus.

Editor's Choice

THE FRENCH KITCHEN

Blandine Brutel is a busy mom who knows how to get a meal on the table lickity-split. She teaches small classes in her home kitchen all about French cuisine from her home country. You may have heard of her as “Chez Blandine,” a personal chef specializing in French food, or associated with “Wholly Crêpe,” which she co-owned and was the chef. These are now in the past since she has opened her new cooking classes. The first class I took from her I learned how to make homemade French baguette in an hour. Amazing.

CAFÉ CORTO COFFEE GALLERY

This tasty treat is addictive. It’s a Colombian corncake stuffed with shredded chicken that has been marinated in a cilantro, onion mixture and braised. The chicken gets topped with sliced avocado and a fried egg (I like mine over easy so the creamy yolk pours out over the chicken like a sauce). It comes with a jicama salad and baked plantain chips. Cost is $7.

LA BELLA VITA RISTORANTE ITALIANO

Born and raised in Italy, owners Giuliano Cassuli and Tiziano Cestari have brought the food from their home to the Springs. Cassuli, who is the chef, lived in the southern region, and Cestari, who is the general manager, grew up in the northern region. The pasta is homemade, as is everything else on the menu. My favorite dish: Burrata alla Bella Vita, grilled Crostini di Pane (toast) with prosciutto, fresh tomato and burrata topped with fresh basil and olive oil.

Editor's Choice

RAMON Q’S CANTINA: MEXICAN FOOD WITH A TWIST

Elizabeth St. James, who owns the restaurant and is the chef, gets all the credit for this amazing “twist” on a burger. For $12, the burger starts with a 1/3-pound perfectly cooked beef patty piled with hickory-smoked brisket that has been marinated in cinnamon and coffee grounds. Then, it’s topped with crisp slices of bacon, avocado slices, sautéed onions and jalapeños, and a green salsa. Fried potato cubes completes the plate. It’s a multi-napkin task to get it eaten.
